DOKMAI Export Co Ltd is a small export company based in Vientiane, capital of Lao P.D.R. Situated at the heart of South East Asia, Laos shares its borders with Thailand, Myanmar, China, Vietnam and Cambodia. DOKMAI is member of the LNCCI and the Lao handicraft Association.
Laos possesses a variety of crafts among which silver crafts, wood works such as home furniture from exotic woods and rattan. DOKMAI focuses mainly on textile specialties such as fashion accessories, home textiles and home decoration articles from local hand-woven silk and hand embroidered textiles made by rural women in a century old tradition. You will also find table sets and hand made mulberry paper products.
DOKMAI's objectives are twofold: (1) to promote Laos silk handicraft beyond the national frontiers and (2) to inspire the weavers , mainly rural women from poor remote areas of Laos to use their skills for the production of contemporary silk fashion accessories which will attract international customers seeking for fashionable in vogue accessories which do not bear any health risk.
Dokmai has therefore created its own label for exquisite silk, the DOKMAI Silk trademark which is 100 percent natural, produced only from genuine Laotian silk from locally bred and fed silk worms, cleaned with non toxic, bio-degradable detergents, dyed with plant dyes or non allergen chemical dye stuff (GOTS certified), and hand-woven on traditional wooden looms. DOKMAI provides the design and colour schemes for these products which are manufactured by a cooperative of peasant rice farming women struggling to improve their livelihoods with silk weaving. Before being shipped to our customers all products are quality control checked by DOKMAI.
DOKMAI adheres to the principles of fair trade and does not use any child labour in its production chain. Currently DOKMAI is undergoing the process of having the silk for this product group certified as natural and health hazard free. In addition, DOKMAI - as active member of the Fair Trade in Laos workgroup - is seeking to be recognized as fair trade enterprise. |
